You'll need some kind of member script to do this. Either you write it yourself or use an already existing one, you'll need scripts. Try searching http://www.hotscripts.com/ and also take a look at http://www.phpnuke.org/

Welcome to TWF

What exactly are your 'members' signing up for? That will determine what sort of script you need.

But is 'getting a username...password...crap like that' usefull for the site? I mean, why should visitors become users? What is the reason behind it?

What is the purpose of obtaining a username?

Do you plan on integrating a bulletin board system or other interactive system which would require visitor identification?

Many bulletin board software comes with a "member" system built in. PHP-Nuke (mentioned above) also has it integrated.

You have to be careful with this kind of thing as if you are collecting email addresses people can view this as just a way of you building a mailing list which you could sell or whatever. Only ask people to join if your content requires it and not just because you think it'd be cool.

Umm, this isn't real-time chat.

It's a bulletin board. The way it works is you post something and await a response (which can take hours). You can't expect us to respond every minute, although it happens sometimes. Wink

Okay, that's not a good enough reason for doing this. If there's no good reason to make people sign up, why bother? Honestly, I think the profliferation of sites trying to get people to register is getting out of control. Now you have to register to download trial software from Macromedia and Adobe! Download.com makes you regsiter to do anything. Personally, I've just about had enough. How is a person supposed to remember a username and password for every site they visit? It's rediculous, not to mention the spamming potential.

Anyway, I think you ought to think twice about whether or not you need to do this. Maybe you ought to concentrate on improving the basics of your web knowledge, and go from there. If you don't know what PHP is you shouldn't be trying to use it.

Megan,

I completely agree with you. I've stopped using a lot of websites (i.e. download.com) when they forced registration. It's so annoying to have to register to use every single website. I can understand if it's a forum or a site that requires it, but sites like download.com do it just to get users email so that they can spam the life out of them.

I also agree completely Megan. It's getting out of hand. I even have two emailaccounts only for registering at sites like Download.com.
A possibility to register is not a bad thing as long as you (the user/the visitor) can choose to register or not.

For someone as new to site building as you are, the best advice I can give you is to search http://hotscripts.com for a prefab member services script.

you are WAY too new to being a webmaster to consider messing with any server side language. also, it is a good idea to LEARN some programming, not just use dreamweaver.

anyone can do any amount of work provided it isnt the work they are supposed to be doing.
