No, not possible. You could have a clear image on top of the background image with an image map on it. Could you explain in more detail what you are trying to do? A link or mock-up would be helpful.

okay, on The Nobots! you will see that there are silohuettes for all of the Nobots in question. one of the recommendations from a critique is to make them all clickable and it woul lead to their Bio page. but the silohuettes are just part of a large background image that fall in behind the CSS layout. so i doubted this would be possible, but i figured i would ask if anyone knew something i didnt. can you think of another way that this would be possible?

Hello.
I see what you are trying to accomplish - but I would design those into the page and not make them a background image. On my screen (1024) they just fit - if I make the screen smaller the one's on the end start going away.

What you are trying to achieve is half possible, as I have kind of done it before, however, you don't have "the whole image map in the background" you just have the image. Links still need to be clickable

What program do you do your website on. In DW8, you could make the images a hotspot and apply a link.

The only way it could be done would be to have a layer or table cell with a background image applied to it, and then place your image map within that layer/table cell. Your image map would have to be a transaparent supported gif image tho.

I think the only way it can be done is by setting your background image and then overlaying the same map on top of it and make those images clickable.

OK, with the images being on the left, it will be alittle easier.
So take the BG pic, cut out the whole left hand side with figures
to desired width, save as seperate image. In desired HTML pages
create a table on left hand side to the desired size & place the
new pic as BG image. Change the body BG image to black.
you should be able use Fireworks MX to slice the new background
down the left side, making the figures into individual slices, with
out disturbing size or position of anything & then make the slices hot.
