I used to use SmartFTP(.com) until I found the FireFTP extension for Firefox. So, if you use Firefox, I would highly recommend using that.

I use FileZilla. I can't compare it to other ftp clients because FileZilla does everything I need it to so I've never had to try any others.Smiling

Another vote for FileZilla.

gFTP is another good one for Linux users.

Hey! It compiles! Ship it!

Why would anyone need to actually buy an FTP package nowadays? The freebies seem to do it all. I generally use the FTP feature within Dreamweaver, but the free packages look to be more flexible.

Actually, you can probably get anything free off the internet that's better or just as good as the expensive stuff.

As for firefox ftp, I'll check that out, thanks all!

My vote is for FileZilla. I love it. Once I've downloaded SmartFTP. But i could not properly log on to my site using that. So I immediately un-installed it and downloaded FileZilla. It's working for me . Moreover it is a freebie. So no tensions. Even wordpress recommends FileZilla for uploading the files in the wp-content or for wp-themes.

There's actually a Free FTP plugin for Firefox called FireFTP, it's pretty good. On GNU+Linux I've been using Konqueror as an FTP client, which is probably a bit too eazy for most people, but it's simple and doesn't require me to open a new window. Smiling

Well FileZilla on my part too, The easiest part would be migration as it uses just one XML file to migrate settings and saved sites...

I use FileZilla

but miss the live file editing feature I had with Smartftp

Where you select a file on the server to work on and the ftp client opens it in your editor, when you click save in your edtor it is updated live to your server

This feature is in FileZilla3, but it's still in beta stage, and looks like they are still fixing many bugs

It is a great feature if you are tweaking many little bits of code and wanting to see the results in the browser before you move onto the next bit of editing
click save and refresh your browser

I use a local folder for editing and just drag and drop of course from local folder to server folder, but it takes a lot longer with having to do all that and then click confirmation of overwriting files

If you want to edit files live on the server, check out PSPad. It supports editing files through an FTP session.

http://net2ftp.com is a good one, you dont need to download anything and its just as good as a client program. I think you can even unzip ZIP files on the server.
