i need to backup my website, to my pc.

is it best to do that with front page or another program?

Your first option is to check with your host and see what they provide. Most provide you with an option of downloading your website with a single click.

If not, your best bet it to use an FTP client like FileZilla. That will take care of your files. If you need your database backed up, that procedure will depend on what kind of DB it is and what methods your host provides. Usually, you will find a version of phpMyAdmin to manage your database. There, you will find an export option that will you to download your database as an SQL file.
