Hmmm... that is an interesting site. I just took a look at it yesterday. I've never been a huge fan of w3schools. I think the content is relatively mediocre considering the search rankings and recommendations (and presumably traffic) it gets. It's overrated.
On the other hand, I think it's pretty scummy to make a whole site ripping apart another website, down to line-by-line inaccuracies. As a writer of web design help resources, I know it sometimes makes sense to simplify things for newbies, even it means being somewhat inaccurate.

I've found that the W3 Schools site is a good way to learn the basics of a language. You can then add to your knowledge from that foundation, like building the basement before building the rest of the house. I think too many newbies begin by purchasing some thousand-page "bible" and then get lost in the details.

For PHP, I like the PHP in a Nutshell book it is also a good reference when you don't have access to the online manual. Most books from the "in a nutshell".

Why are people buying php books? There are a zillion PHP tutorials available for free on the internet, just type "PHP tutorial" in your favorite search engine and you can start reading. However, if you really want to learn PHP I can only say that in my honest opinion no online tutorial can help you learn PHP faster and easier then a good PHP book will. Invest a few bucks in a real PHP book - you won't regret it!!!
