What do you think of .vg?

I've never even knew that the British Virgin Islands had their own domain until now.

I'm not sure I would ever associate it with 'very good' or 'videogames' and so personally I think it's probably a waste of money to own. I would rather sacrifice my domain name for a .com extension say, over having the exact domain name I wanted and having a .vg extension.

Ultimately if it went anywhere, it would be no more of a presence then that of .tv, an extension that holds little sway in my book.

Anyway, just my two cents

I forget which but some little-known domain extensions were recently dropped due to lack of use. I would be a little skeptical of owning a domain like .vg (what's the population of the British Virgin Islands anyway?) as it may eventually get dropped due to lack of interest.

Unless you can rebrand them to mean 'very good' or 'video games', that might actually encourage ICANN to drop them, don't think they're too tolerant of people using domain extensions for purposes other than what was intended.

1. ICANN would NEVER drop a ccTLD due to lack of interest. NEVER!! maybe some gTLD or some funTLD ( ) but never a ccTLD. Thats just crazy. It's like telling "yo people cut the telephone pre-dial of pakistan, no one is calling them anyway".
The only reason for a ccTLD of being dropped, is simply when the country doesn't exist anymore!

2. ICANN would NEVER drop a ccTLD due to "misuse". Coz they f* don't care! Thats the job of the registry - and as long as it isn't illegal, they wouldn't care either! Check out Wiki (Domain-Hack), btw. there is even a Site dedicated to this "phenomenon" -> http://xona.com/domainhacks/

3. According to Google .vg ist hosting over 220.000 Domains. Yeah, like try "dropping" that.

btw: timjpriebe already pointed it out. In fact there are some well known ccTLDs which are actually used for something else: .am / .fm

no prob tim. Yep, anyway "domain hacking" is something you would rather find in "web2.0" ( yeah, cut my tongue for saying that word ) projects (e.g. "del.icio.us") ...

Personally I don't like that site too much - only good if you are randomly searching for domains you want to trade later on. If you need a good name (including a domain hack) you will need something like: wordnavigator.com (you can search for words ending as you want), dico.isc.cnrs.fr/dico/en/search (english synonym dictionary)

I've used domainsbot.com as well, and liked it okay. It's not always accurate when it says whether the domain's been taken or not, though.
