I am working on a new tool/online service, but the name is not finalized.
Some names are available as a .com, others are already taken but .net/etc are available.
Should I aim for strictly .com availability and consider .net or any other? The main reason I personally want a .com is I fear that if I got the .net, I could potentially be losing customers to the .com if it deals with something very close to mine...

Why don't you do it in both .com and .net? Or maybe I don't understand anything?

If you have the funds you could always consider purchasing all the names (.com, .net, etc...) and have them all point to your main name.

Agree, but if the budget doesn't allow, choose among available .com names.

I'd choose .com.
