are you a registrar?
I guess my real question is why would you want to do this if you can't provide them with the way to register the name they know is open?

To be hones, I've never seen the point of adding a whois search to a site unless you're actually going to do something with the results. I'm with http://www.domainpeople.com who offer an excellent templated domain search and registration service.

Matt's whois is a pretty good one. It will look up the domain name to see if it is available and also has a nice wizard that will give you a list of domain names based on some variables that you enter. It is listed on the page that Suzanne listed.

Modernbill has a built in whois feature and intergration to many Domain registrars for automatic registration.
If your planning to sell domains I would recommend this product. modernbill.com
