Well it is argued that hyphens are taken as a space, whereas underscores _ are a char in themselves.
Some argue the underscore can be identified as spam, but I'm not so sure it really matters.

There are many MANY things that determine you page rank and amount of traffic you get.
So hyphens might well "help" but in the grand scheme of things, it may perhaps be like a handful of sand in the desert.
Yes each individual grain is what makes up the desert, but when you already have 1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 grains of sand, what is another 100?

I think Google officially says that it doesn't matter, or that hyphens have only a slight advantage. I forget - anyone want to look it up?

Another thing to consider is that too many hyphen separated keywords could be a spam indicator.

It could be like that.

Hyphens in my domains have consistently underperformed non-hyphenated domains. Say xyzcompany better than xyz-company. Not saying its a rule, just how its worked for me in my tests.

It's good only for testing.

This might be useful, http://www.webpronews.com/topnews/2007/07/24/cutts-google-honors-the-und... So hyphens and underscores are equivalent.

Whether it's better to split or seperate words is difficult to say. I would imagine splitting terms would match people's searches better, or make such a small difference that it's not worth thinking about. Smiling

I dont think they have an effect one way or the other in all honesty i would only ever go for hyphens if a hyphen was already in the company name or logo.

I think it's not user-friendly first of all and only in the second turn search engines might not like it.
