I have a client who needs to put some extremely sensitive (private) documents in a members-only section of the site. He is highly concerned about a third party hosting solution, and I'm not sure what to advise him. What would be the best way to host a site with sensitive information like this? My first thought is that if documents are properly encrypted it shouldn't be a problem. My second thought is that if it's really that important for this information to be private it shouldn't be on the website in the first place.
Any thoughts? I don't really know what to tell my client.

I'm leaning towards your 'why-is-it-on-the-net' reasoning. Ask him about alternative means of communication.

Megan, you are thinking correctly. If the documents are very sensitive, he should encrypt them and probably get his own private server so that no other users are allowed there.

That's what PGP is for.
