I have had my eye on a domain for a while now. It will expire tomorrow. If the owner doesn't renew, how long before it will be available for sale so that I can buy it?

And don't forget there are many systems out there that are set to automatically snatch up expired domains the moment they are available. Heck my old domain name, wasn't used for much, and it was snatched up. I also have a site that uses, advertises, the .ORG version, I also registered the .COM one on my own to redirect to the .ORG one. The .COM was snatched up when it expired.

Yeh, the best way to be on the safe side is to use multiannual registration of your domain, like 10 years.

A domain is usually in Redemption Period for 30 days. The existing owner can still get it out of redemption by paying the registrar's Redemption Fee. After the 30 days are up it goes into a Pending Delete status for 5 days. After 5 days it will drop.

Actually... It varies from one registrar to another (for instance, it's different with Network solutions, to Melbourne IT and TuCows etc).
