Whoever you bought the domain name through should send you a renewal so that you can continue with it, if you don't renew it then it goes into what's called a detagged state before it is released as open to buy to anyone else.

what period is detagged state? I thought once a domain expires
if you don't buy it, somebody can buy right away.

It depends on the registrar. Some registrars have a "grace period" where they will remind you to purchase it. It's best not to rely on this, however. Wink

Thanks, The site I got my domain from is also my hosting site. I plan to change hosting companies. Will I still have to depend on the old hosting company to send me a renewal or is that transfered to new host. If it isn't transferred do you think I will have trouble getting the renewal since I do not host with them no longer.

You should be able to transfer the domain name to the new hosting company. What the webmistress said is only really true for domains ending in .uk

Also, most domain registrations are for two years (Although I believe it is possible to register some domains for only one year).

At the end of the renewal period, whoever you have the domain with will contact you to renew the domain name. You can either go ahead with the renewal or leave it and the domain will go back on the public market again. If you do renew the domain name you will have to repeat the process all over again in a couple of years.
