What is the best pop-up style to use?

Hi guys. I'd like to ask you about the following matter. I know pop ups are not SEO-friendly, althought I see them in use on different sites. And as I work at my website updating, I'm thinking about pop style implementing, especially popover one. So if I use pop style, which one should I choose: pop in - pop under - pop over or site exit?

Please suggest me. Thank you in advance.
Regards

pop over seems to work the best. popups don't really work so well now that most people have pop up blockers. pop overs work as a java script on the page so the blockers wont block it. pop unders, people tend to ignore and simply close because they don''t know where it came from.

Many thanks Synchronous for such a detailed answer. Will keep in mind your suggestions. Pop over is still the best option so far, although some webmasters don't recommend to use popups at all.

it's true, mostly they are unacceptable, lots of affiliate websites use them though

I use hello bar as a popover on my site. It's not as intrusive and you can customize it to however you please. I think more people are likely to x out of a pop up if they don't know what the website is really about, so I give them time to figure out if this is a website that could benefit them.

Ok, thanks Online_Loan for a sensible hint.
I'll probably think about Hello bar usage.
