I always think that the top slogan and image should work together to get the customer's message across. For example, on my own site, my slogan is "attractive affordable websites - search engine optimised" which tells people immediately what I do whilst the rotating pictures of past websites back this up and give a visual example of my work.
I also find that visuals lower down on the page, and the use of background shading for important information, can make websites more visually appealing.

Do not put up a "professional" site and then have a page for showing off your work that says "Under Construction". I don't care how fancy it looks, to me, that just says you either don't have your act planned out, or you rush to get incomplete things running. Either case, not the type of business I want to deal with.

I think that web design tips are really important while designing any site, a clean layout that uses a lot of white space enhances a site's looks. If your Web pages are oft-repeated by people with slower modems then designing a page that looks best over a T1 is not a successful strategy.

Clean layout, use a lot of white space to improve the appearance of the site. Try to focus on content, using Dream weaver templates here. Use fonts available on all computers, so your site look messed up.

You need to think about SEO. Even if you build a beautiful, absolutely gorgeous with great functionality, it is nothing if people can't find it. Think of it as building a great house without the entrance. Imagine how you would get in.

Test your site design in several different browsers. Right now it's about a three-way split between Firefox, Chrome and Internet Explorer. Your site should look good in all of them. Another tip is that using a web design program can, possibly, introduce some weird code into your site. Especially if you do something, change your mind and then undo it. Learn enough HTML to be able to edit your sites code and look for weirdness.

Be if you are using images to give those images alt tags, it makes your site SEO friendly. I also like to make templates, it makes dropping content for multiple pages faster.

Although Dreamweaver is the best editor for web design on the market, it is best not to use it to publish sites. If you do it will include a lot of markup, and make your site heavier. I made this mistake a while ago and I now use dreamweaver to design and then upload the site using an FTP client. You then have complete control of the code. It may be possible to remove this in settings , but I couldn't find it

I'm not sure why we shouldn't create menus on the left-side. Most people (who read from left to right) notice first the things presented on top and left. It's an advantage to put the important stuff there.

But, are the menus always more important than the content? Usually, but not always. If you have a blogging site, for example, you may consider the content to be more important than the menus. This is why many blog designs show the content on the left with the menus to the right.
