Hi everybody. I'm planning to build a CMS in PHP. I'd like to know wich file type of graphic would be the best suited. For example I've found some good icons at Iconshock - Professional Icons. They offer various types of formats, but I'm not sure if the shadows and semi transparent ares of png can work fine.

When I was looking at my site with IE6 it didn't pick up the transparency on the PNG. Which sucks because that was a lot sharper than the GIF.

IE doesn't do .png transparencies to well (if at all), so .gif would be your safest bet.

Yeah IE7 finally manages to deal with it I think, but for now it's not recommended you do it, which is a huge shame as it's potential is great.

In another 5 years, when something better comes along, everyone who uses IE will have the ability to see the transparency on a PNG.

As CptAwesome showed, there are hacks around the problem. ie5.5 and upwards can use Javascript to work transparency in. You could use that technique or the one described on this forum: http://www.webmaster-forums.net/showthread.php?t=32884&page=2&pp=15
Am inclined to agree with this, I motion for a vote of "no confidence" in IE. Even version 7 is nowhere near Firefox or Opera in terms of features, you certainly wont get that nice warm "Open Source" feeling from using ie either.
