Need to convert .mov video files to .avi

For the past year or so, I've been taking short video sequences with my Kodak camera. Today, I tried to edit them using Microsoft XP's MovieMaker, and I received an error message saying that MM doesn't recognize .mov files.

I've found free downloadable apps on Google for doing the conversion, but I'd first like to hear some recommendations from experienced people before I start my project.

I'm sure WinAVI has something like that, I use it to convert all my .VOB files to AVI. It might not be what you're wanting, but it sure is a handy tool.
