Searching for search engins

Has anyone done a study or drawn conclusions on how best to incorporate a search function into a website? The kinds of things I'd like to know are:

What apps are other websites using?
What are the best 5 or 6 search products and how do they compare?
- Retrieval speed
- Initial cost
- Annual cost
- Website content/indexing refresh rate (every second, hour, day, week, every month, etc...)
- Automatic or manual index refreshing?
- What are other webmasters saying about these apps
- Depth and accuracy of searches
- Turn-key inter-site apps or do they require outside the site support, ie; indexing
- Other benefits/comments

I appreciate any comments or thoughts on the matter you may have.

Not sure what you mean???
Are you looking to design a search website like Google or Yahoo. Or are looking into adding a search function in your site.
Your post is a little confusion.

You could use the big ones (Google,Yahoo) web site searches, and I think if you pay them they are more accurate than if you just use the site:blah

You could also look at:
