what's the status?
some of us (well at least me but i'd have to believe alot of others) are wondering what the heck the situation is with the domain theft.
yeah, i know it's really none of my worry, but i would like to know if any headway is being made, if UltimateSearch has been contacted or responded, and what the registrars excuse is for giving up a domain that was paid for another year.
Also, considering Ultimate Search has obviously made a habit out of this, i'm curious as to how they are in business and why nothing had ever been done to stop them before they happened upon webmaster-forums.com

i dont think im the only one who was under the impression the domain was registered through June, 2003...
if that's the case, and the domain simply expired, that needs to be said also. from what i've read on the company though (Google), they use some unknown method to trick registrars into transfering the registration before the domain expires.

From all the information we have to date, the domain was registered through to sometime in 2003, yes.
At this point, Chad has been trying to contact the registrar and get information from them before proceeding and is meeting with a resounding silence. Because this is a potentially hot area, he's going through the appropriate channels first.
While we try to find out what happened and if we can get it back, I'd encourage everyone to please promote webmaster-forums.net as that will be the primary url from now on. If we wait until the .com is returned, we will lose the community. Chad decided to switch to the .net address as the primary focus.

thanks Suzanne. like i said, i know it's really not my problem but i'm interested in seeing how it pans out.
i hate to say it, but from the stories of other victims of this same scam it doesnt seem that going through the appropriate channels did much good. one site, some poetry site, got their domain back only because they were able to generate enough negative publicity for someone to give a damn.

I agree, we all have something lose/gain here. I'm hoping that Chad will be able to give us some more information soon.
This situation breaks my heart. The greed of people like this who "prospect" on the web is very damaging.

for the record...
The day I discovered that TWF was down, I checked the whois and it *was* available for registration. I briefly considered grabbing it for safety sake and am now kicking myself for not doing so. It was a day or two later that the domain had been scooped up.
Whether the expiry was legit or not is a different story but on the surface, it appear to me that Ultrasearch were merely vultures lying in wait. Sleazy? maybe. Illegal? no.
Personally, I think the .net extension is more appropriate for our use anyway. I just wish you'd grabbed the unhyphenated version instead. I'm not a fan of hyphenated domain names.

That's because you have your preferences set to not allow e-mails from the board. That's really the only way we have to contact people when things like this happen.

Hmm. I have mine to allow emails from admins, but I didn't get an email either about the .net domain name. I couldn't load the site for days and then one day I noticed in our logs that we had some recent hits from this forum and that's how I found out about the .net.

Hopefully with all the emails I've sent out over the last couple of days asking people with links to the old domain to change them to the .net we might get some new members or even old ones rediscovering the new links.

Maybe you should send out a new email to all users letting them know about the domain change? You can first explain why you're sending the email again (just incase someone did receive it).
