Adding to profile information - browser used, etc

I think it would be helpful to include browsers, versions along with platform to the profile of each member. That way, if someone reports a problem you have a little bit more to go on. It may also come in useful if you want something checked out on a certain platform, like Macintosh. For me:

Platforms: Windows 98 SE
Browsers: Explorer 5.5, Netscape 7, Opera 7

and for those really curious:

Tools: NoteTab Light 4.91, PhotoPaint 8, FTP Commander 5.58

The people at JSCity/webxpertz do that on their forums.

I don't think it's absolutely necessary. Often people require help with browsers other than the ones they have listed, so they'd have to mention it anyway. Or they may even have a problem with only one of the browsers listed.

Though, I see how it can help hasten the process if people forget to say what browsers they need help with, and it can be assumed that the one(s) they have listed is/are the one(s) in question.

What do the others think?

I don't think it is necessary, I have the main browsers installed but I mainly use IE unless I'm doing a critique and then I'll specify which one I used in relation to my comments. Most people don't fill in their profiles as it is now so I don't see that many would fill in this part either.

I think it's a terrible idea -- if you want to know, ask. This is a community, not a database.

Besides, tools change and I know that personally, I am pretty horrid about keeping things like profiles up to date. I'd prefer have no info there and be asked rather than passively mislead someone.

my 2 cents.

On ther other hand, we do have stickied threads going where folks can discuss their favourite/most-used apps and tools.

I've seen people on other forums put their browser/platform/screen res. info in their sigs, just in small print. So people could do that if they wanted. Like Julia, I usually point out which browser I'm using if I'm having a problem that I think is browser-related.

Maybe if this was a computer support forum, but it isn't. Most questions won't need your computer info for answering and if they do, most people include them in their posts. Plus, as others have said, it's annoying to have to update your info in your profile, this just adds another thing.
