Does anyone here have a GPS?
We're getting my dad a GPS system for Christmas but we (my sister and I) don't know what to look for. Does anyone here have one? Can you suggest any brands or features we should be looking for?

Heh, I've got one but my brother poached it for when he got deployed to Iraq
Still, I guess it's serving a higher purpose than stuck in my apartment most of the time eh;)
Try and go for one thats in the £100 - £150 price range they normally are ok.

I had a Garmin Nuvi 350. Very nice unit. I had a friend recommend the Garmin line, as he has over the years usd many different ones for camping and also navigation.
The cool part was that it had the entire USA map system loaded in from the get go, and was like a huge US yellow pages! Many times I usedit to just look up a phone number. (I'm sure if you bought one in Canada, they sell them there with Canada instead of USA)
Before I sold mine, I figured I'd go see about getting updates for it, figured I'd probably have like one year of free updates or something. Nope, their updater didn't ask any registration info, download it and go. Very nice! I was quite impressed with the unit. There were only 2 times where it gave me a wrong direction, and one was in Chicago on a stretch of construction where they had you rerouted anyhow....
My wife loved that I could switch it to a male British sounding voice.
Oh the only other thing, the suction cup mount, at first i was really disappointed in it, until I learned the trick to moisten it before sticking it, them it sticks really well.
The unit takes a SD card, will play music (pauses music to give directions), had other things built in that i didn't use much. very easy to figure out and use right out of the box, it wasn't till a week after i had it that i realized it didn't come with a manual, and that was just when i went to put away the packaging. never needed one.
The thing I liked most, was while we were on a trip to new york, i told it to find restaurants, gave it the option for "on my route" and as we drove it constantly gave updates to upcoming places, and when I selected one, it inserted it into our trip, took us there, and back to highway! They had come a long way from the handheld unit I had last used about 10 years ago!

Yeah I'd suggest Garmin too... Some with existing Pocket PC's only buy attachments to the SD card slot which is really impressive, I have tried it on a friends car, I used it for only a week just to try it out. The more comprehensive ones are those used in boats which auto updates and has voice commands...
