I think that the plea for subscriptions is sad. Advertising isn't working? Why push to a pay user base instead of having web developers pay a nominal fee to get listed (oh, right, advertising!) and such like that?
The programmer page was obviously heavily influenced, the arrow is identical, but ripped? I don't think so. It's not like rounded edges haven't been kicking around forever. Same with Bezier curves.
But I'm not all that sure that people should have the right to stop anyone else from running with an idea. Trademarks are one thing, but ultra-common design elements? I don't know.
That and CoolHomePages.com is owned by a design company. Ostensibly a company would be paying for CoolHomePages as a way to get business (advertising).
Appearance wise, that's far from a "rip", IMO. I've seen much, much worse. There are similarities - but it's not terribly bad to be influenced by other sites.
People that run around like that looking for sites that have the same table alignment have no lives. That is far from a rip, I wouldnt even allow this thread. Such a thread sends negativity towards the supposed ripping site.

I didn't look for the site, I bumped into it and noticed that the layout reminded me very much of coolhomepages. I just posted it here because I was curious, just wanted to know your opinions. I absolutely mean no harm or offence to the site or its creators. If you believe this thread should be removed, then please remove it (I assume you can, as you're a mod?)

Not to mention that programmer tutorials has been arround longer than the other one.
I didn't know that, and that's why I posted here -- to find out a little more.
I think that is a popular website design. I have seen many other websites designed just like those two. And we shouldn't really be assuming that one of them copied another; maybe it just happened that way. :\
My apologies for assuming which one preceeded the other, as well. The arrow is identical, but I can't tell just by looking which one had it first, and it's a very common design element.
well i just hope they don't shut down coolhomepages.com i really the site, i felt for them when they appeared on fuckedcompany.com guess how many visitors they got

Personally, I think they are being a little unfair vis-a-vis the Cool/Atari slam. Same colour scheme? - sure. Similar logos? maybe. Beyond that, there is not enough similarity to warrant front page exposure on pirated-sites.com, imo.
This is a case of a national organization copying a bunch of hobbyists! Ha! Again, not direct pirating but immitating a lot of design elements - can't be considered copyright infringment or anything like that but it does make them look really lame.
It might not be a 100% rip, but you can tell they were really inspired by your design! There is nothing wrong with incorporating certain ideas from other websites as long as you try to create something new with it.
I hate it when designers/developers get so lazy like this. They didn't even make the effort to make it 100%, probably too much work.

I didn't say that this was a direct rip. I said that they immitated a lot of our design elements and positioning, which is true. If this was a completely unrrelated site on a totally different topic I would have considered it to be a coincidence. In this case, however, IMHO it is not - these sites, in a way, are in direct competition. I also now that gymcan.org was rather annoyed when gymn.ca came out because we were (and are) doing a much better job than they are.
Again, not what one would call a "rip" or pirating but does have too many similarities to be considered a coincidence.

That said, the arrow is pretty damning.

How about a Sitepoint rip? See http://www.pirated-sites.com for some more examples (& time wasting fun that unfortunately doesn't work in Opera!)

There's a lot in their archives that don't really seem to match all that well, although some of them are identical!

Here's one from one of my own sites:
My site: http://www.gymn.ca
(really bad) immitation: http://www.gymcan.org/home.shtml
