Starting with CentOS 6
I just installed CentOS 6 on Win 7 / Virtual Box (http://centos.sonn.com/6.0/isos/i386/CentOS-6.0-i386-LiveCD.iso). I want to set up a server at home and learn how to do it etc. I am wondering about few things:
1) Do I have the right program (It has a GUI and I am not sure if it is the server "edition"; I followed the following video and person is talking about Server, so... (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FOkHJ2Q4vR4)
Best practice for calculating media file downloads?
Hi,
I need to calculate the number of video and audio file downloads from our media server.
Our media server hosts all our audio files (mp3) and video files (mp4) and it is dedicated to this task i.e. it doesn’t host any html files or image files etc, and we parse our IIS log files monthly using Stone Steps Webalizer.
When I look at the Webalizer stats most of the ‘hits’ are ‘code 206 partial content’ and most of the remainder are ‘code 200 ok’. So for instance our most recent monthly Webalizer stats look something like this -
Total hits: 1,600,000
Code 200 - ok: 300,000
htaccess redirection
I have a domain, eg dom.com, with various sub-domains, eg sub.dom.com. I would like to change the homepage of dom.com from index.html to index.php. To achieve this I added the line "redirect 301 /index.html http://dom.com/index.php" to .htaccess. Although this works for the main domain it also redirects the homepages of the subdomains to dom.com/index.php. How can I restrict the re-direct to the root directory of the top domain and leave sub-domains and sub-directories untouched?
PHP 5 php-fpm memory leak?
I set up a Linode 768 a couple months ago using the "Lemp stack lite" at VPSbible.com (Ubuntu, nginx, phpfpm, etc).
It's been going well except that I've noticed a pattern with memory use.
Over time--usually about a week--the memory used (I watch this using HTOP.... Linux command line) and swap slowly increase. Eventually my disk IO starts to get really busy.
I'm guessing it's swapping a bit heavily at that point.
By accident, I discovered that if I restart PHP-FPM, the memory used immediately drops 50% and swap drops about 66%.
Slowly increases again over a week or so.
Prefered Server Control Panels
Just curious what people use/prefer as far as a control panel.
I come from doing everything by hand, and prefer that. I can keep everything nice and clean.
I just got a dedicated server last week from 1&1 (couldn't pass up the deal they had with first 4 months free). Since I will be offering hosting service for sites that I don't directly maintain (what I am used to), I decided to utilize a control panel.
I have used on one or two sites before the customer side of cPanel, and for one client the full admin of cPanel. Was pretty straight forward and nice.
SSH users and assigning to certain directories
I have added a new SSH user that I want to use for sFTP, but I dont know how to assign that user only to the web root and not have access to other parts of the server?
Any help appreciated.
Setting PHP Mail function on linux for SMTP server
Just unsure how to do this? In my php.ini file, there is the option to set a SMTP server, however, this is for windows?
How can I link my mail function to my SMTP server when php is installed on linux - Ubuntu 10.4. Thanks.
two domains... one site... what to do?
I've got a somedomain.org site and I took the somedomain.com too because people seem to get mixed up.
The question is, what to do w/the .com. Currently, I'm at a shared hosting set up with cpanel and set up a "redirect" in their cpanel applet. So anybody who uses .com ends up at .org.
But I'm moving shortly to a vps I'm managing myself. So I have some different options now, maybe. Do I want .com users to be redirected to .org or is there some better idea? Suggestions?
I've see stuff about "301 redirects" somewhere but don't know beans about that.
Is my server overheating?
Hello,
I just moved a website to another server on which DirectAdmin is installed. I now checked the "System Information" which tells me the following:
Vendor ID GenuineIntel
Processor Speed (MHz) 2400.085
Total Memory 1035108 kB
Free Memory 152836 kB
Total Swap Memory 2097144 kB
Free Swap Memory 1903100 kB
I don't know much about server management, but as far as I understand only 150MB of the 1GB is used. Is this normal or am I having problem here..?
