I usually have a small project or two that I work on from time to time. Something that will make me think, and perhaps read more docs. But, I also like them to be practical or usefull. I'm looking for a new project to write in PHP, but I'm open to other languages.

Gimme !

PHP Chess.

It's something I've been thinking of making myself. Idea is to create a GUI that two users can use to play the game of chess against each other online.

Sure, there's Zone and other programs for this, but I wanted to make a fully customisable game. One where I can change the look of the pieces, board, etc, just by swapping a .gif file. This way I will be able to add my own twists to the game, like modern weapons, interesting terrains and so on. And I can run it off my own server so I can play friends at almost any time with little hassle. Also won't involve any downloads/installs/registrations for the other party. Smiling

Not much PHP coding in itself. All it needs to do is update the graphical output on each player's view, and keep it nicely synced. Much like a chatroom, actually. Wink

Will that do?

I can give you a part of my large project that has me stuck Smiling
Let me know if you want to do it... it's pretty complicated and I'm stuck as to how to make it without making the file 40000K

Laughing out loud

Alright, I'll start planning on a PHP Chess game. And Abhi, I'll make it as customizable as I can. Wink

Don't expect this any time soon. This is just a little pet project to work on from time to time.

Just thought I'd resurrect it to find out whether Mark has completed the project and whether it is ready for a little Beta testing? Wink

Not even close. I haven't touched the project since Dec 1, 2002.
And ATM, I'm too busy to spend any time on it.
