I am ready to buy a new server for home to serve the following services:

- Web server
- Proxy server
- FTP server
- Mail server
- Provide backups of personal information
- A distributed system - if i can run office and other programs from it to client computers??

Can i run all these services from one server?

The web server will run my website, the proxy server will provide extra security and serve web pages faster, mail server to provide backups of emails and add email address,FTP server to add files and download fliles when i want from any computer.

I also want to provide automated backups from the client computers to the server that can archive everything.

What i am not sure is possible is use it as a distributed system. A way to install all my programs on the server and serve or distribute the programs to the client computers??? If you have any ideas let me know.

You should have no problem as long as you don't plan on running any busy sites from a server on a residential internet connection. I haven't had much experience with distributed systems, but I do know that you can't just install MS Office over the network and have it work. The software has to be made for it.

Ok so you think that internet connection now from residential connections are not good enough for high traffic websites?..high traffic as in 10,000 hits a month?

Virgin Media offer 50MB broadband on their fibre optic service.
Download 50MB and upload is 1.5MB (pretty sure that's megabytes and not bits (could be wrong))

That service might handle your 300 to 400 hits a day, but they wont be happy about it. It will likely popup some 'flags' in their system as it's very different to standard home internet activety.

You might want to speak with them first.

Whether it will work or not depends on data being uploaded (from your site and other services) and importantly what the max total simultaneous connections might be.

It's usually megabits, and the thing to remember is that the website will be using the 1.5Mb limit, because all traffic will be as uploading (or outgoing) from the server.
