Umm... to get better rankings? To rank for a broader set of keywords? To rank for a specific keyword? To obtain more traffic through long-tail searches? To get more traffic to your site?
Simple answers, but vary depending on your site's goals.

I would say it's to make search engines aware of the content on your site. That's an important thing to remember: everything in SEO is built on your content, that's the one thing you must get right.

That's a great question, I wonder if there's any purpose at all. The work that goes into it probably has a purpose, but the term SEO I believe has no purpose or reason to live...

I think the main purpose of SEO is to make your website ethically popular in the eyes of major search engines.
SEO is a process of making sure your website can be found by the users who search the Internet. so the main purpose is to come up as one of the first ten listings on a given subject.
