Is PR the only difference? Will Googlebot still follow and index pages with nofollow? Does google it count as a backlink?

Well, I'm not entirely sure how Google internally treats links with dofollow/nofollow. Only Google know that. nofollow is an instruction to ignore the link though. Search engines do sometimes ignore this though, they seem to go and crawl the linked-to page anyway, a nofollowed link will not help your rankings, unless your site has never been crawled before.

I don't think that's actually true anymore. Originally it was a way of preventing links from passing value only. At one time they actually crawled those links (? not sure about that anymore - Yahoo still does).

Here's an article with more information about how Google, Yahoo, and Ask treat nofollow:

Another thing that's come up recently is the use of nofollow to control the flow of PR within your own site. So, for example, if you have some pages linked from your home page that you don't need value passed to, you may nofollow those links to get more PR to flow to your other pages. That's a bit controversial though.

I see this sort of question all the time and here is what I always answer:

Dofollow - allows the site to pass PR on an outgoing link, thus counting as a vote for the quality of the site in the eyes of google

Nofollow - sends signal to the bot that the link is not vouched for so no PR is passed on. Even with a link being "nofollow", the bot still recognizes the link as valid.

I have heard of the dofollow.php plugin for wordpress, but it seems that
you folks are talking about a tag attribute.

Is there such an tag attribute as 'dofollow'? That would be news to me.

Does anyone have a link to any search engine that claims to recognize a 'dofollow' attribute?

Have you all gone mad?

Laughing out loud

Well, we were already mad.

Don't think people meant dofollow literally. It's just meant as the absence of nofollow. Smiling

Google will count link on nofollow, though won't pass any value to your site.
No follow is just like a command to say don't pass page rank. But it has been said that even if there is a do follow link trust rank is still passed.
