I just have a new website launched and I suddenly found myself becoming fixated with SEO. Are meta tags still in use? The ebooks and other resources I’ve read have different points on meta tags.

The short answer: not really. Because of all the keyword spamming that went on in the past most SE's have pretty much abandoned use of meta tags. They will use text on the page and in the title tag instead. From what I understand it is important to have meta tags, but don't spend too much time on them. Remember that the description will show up on the SERP's so you want something there that will give a human more information about what the page contains.

So, have meta tags, but don't obsess over them. Spend a few minutes writing something up and be done with it.

Hi,
No. The large majority of search engines do not use Meta Tags as part of their ranking algorithm.

Only meta description tag can play role to increase/decrease CTR of your serp listing. Because more relevant and precise your description would be there is good chance for higher click rate in serp.
But meta keywords tag is very much useless today.

as the earlier posters said, the keyword tag doesnt carry much weightage in ranking algorithms. The description tag however may still carry some weightage, however small it may have become over the years.

While saying the above, both the tags should still be used properly in website design and shouldnt be left empty.

Meta tags are not used by major search engines; however there are few smaller search engines that still use Meta tags. There is no harm in using meta tags as there is nothing to loose.

You can use keywords in meta tags, and it will help you to list on search engines that still use this technology.
