I have been running a site for a year or so for my conservatories and have had some erratic google listing positions over time.

As it is a new site I know it will fluctuate but recently I have been much lower positioned whilst doing the same amount of promotion.

My question is; is there any way to try to see what side of promotion I am not doing enough of! I have been writing similar articles, Pr drops, forums etc. and seem to be having less impression now.

Thank
Toby Frost

I would say your problem is having a Flash site. I think it's quite good looking, but the reality is Flash in this medium has gotten a bit tedious for the user and is seriously hampering your search engine rankings.

Consequently, i would have an HTML site. I would also adjust the design so it allows for more content, i.e not restrict to a rectangle.

Looking at your competitors for the phrase 'conservatories uk,' many have opted for large content rich websites. As good as this is for their rankings, none of the sites look particularly good, so you have an opportunity here!

They do have a lot of incoming links too, so i would suggest studying them and see if you can get the same links for your site. Ultimatley, just keep up what you're doing currently, as obviously they have had time on their side. If you keep at it you can catch up eventually... There are also directory lists on this very site you can submit your site to.

Alternatively make it easier for yourself by going for a more targeted keyword phrase, and base your site around that. To find popular conservatory related phrases, use the Google Keyword Tool.

For example:
'bespoke conservatories'
'upvc conservatories'
'modern conservatories'

It could also be that you're continuing to rely on the same methods that worked at first but are no longer having the same effect. It's good to have a wide vareity of incoming link types. If you have a lot of incoming links from the same sites they will stop counting them after awhile i.e. a few links from a given site are as good as a thousand.

Check your incoming links in your Google account and at Yahoo using the linkdomain: command. Yahoo orders them roughly in order of value, so the important ones will show up at the top. Try to get more of those links and less of the ones that appear towards the bottom. You can also do this on your competitors' sites to see where their most valuable links are coming from.

I agree that the flash is probably hurting you a lot - this is something we've discussed before though.

Thanks for the input troops, will endeavour to HTMLise the site - is just unfortunate my brother has expertise in Flash (Hells magnet!)

I will persevere with the suggestions and chase getting it altered!

If you are after PR - focus on link building. PR is determined woth quality link backs your site has. The most common ways of getting backlinks are thru social bookmarking, directory submissions, submitting to press release sites, forum sigs, etc. etc.. What's important from an SEO point of view is getting relevant and quality (organic / natural) back links. You get this if you provide very good content that would make other sites want to link to your site. Also having back links to high PR sites helps your site on PR building as well.

If you are after SERP (keyword ranking) - best is to opt for on-page optimization thru meta-tags, keyword selection and optimization, etc.

Hope it helps Wink

One thing you could do when building up your one-way links is to hide your affiliates, or links page. If the SEs never find your page with the recipri-blah-cole-something links, then your exchange will be like a one-way inbound link. The best way would be to contact the link partner through Email to keep your page from being indexed.
