Dunno if you guys have ever seen this, but it's a handy little too that lets you see the pankrank of your site without having the google toolbar installed.

You have to embed it on the page you want to monitor though...

So you have to install a sniplet of code on your site? I'd rather just install the toolbar.

The toolbar is only an option for Win/IE, no?

Some of us don't have convenient access to the toolbar. Wink

Hi,

you can try this PR checker + inbound links: www.prsearch.net.

Hmmm.... I come up with a pagerank 5 out of 10 on one of my sites and 6 out of 10 on another. Confused
Guess I'm glad I rely on word of mouth for people who visit me.

I've never worried about the SEs, so I'm not even sure what those numbers actually mean.

PS: What are "inbound links"?

gotta finish redesigning my sites so I can show them again.

PR5 is good, PR6 is great!

Inbound links are links from other sites to yours...

OK, I just tried the site at prsearch.net and it's cool!

I entered in "fish" and the first result was a PR9 site!!!

What are your plans for this wonderful tool...?

Thanks Christian_SEO!

Honestly, the whole pr things confuses me.

I've had the PR6 site up for about 4 years now. I know I used to go to google and see how many sites linked to me and it would come up with this massive number. Now I go and it says there are 143. I don't know if this is good, bad or indifferent.

It's a pretty specialized site though (art lessons from colored pencil artists) and it's always been advertised by word of mouth, so I guess any pr at all is pretty cool. Wink

I probably should be concerned with this though to make sure the instructors are getting the coverage they deserve. I just wouldn't want the numbers to go up because there are a whole bunch of links from sites that have nothing to do with this one (what's the point of that).

As I say... it's all pretty confusing to me.

gotta finish redesigning my sites so I can show them again.

All right, I know I've taken over this thread and I appologize for that.

Doing a search on the various SEs confirms that my site probably only has a pr at all because it is so highly specialized. You have to be looking for sites about colored pencils (or a derivative spelling). It suits me just fine.

I certainly wouldn't want to be trying to get a high pr for "webmasters" or "website designers" though.
My hats off to anyone who can! Laughing out loud

btw: Thanks so much for those links! They're great!

Page Rank is Google's system of rating how important your site is. Page Rank is calculated from several things, including how many sites link to yours and how "important" those sites are. Page Rank is named after Larry Page, and is NOT just about linking, contrary to popular belief.

Well, the common thought is that if you have a whole much of links to your site, you must be pretty cool, and then your site should show up higher than sites that are not as cool. Also, if there are links to your site that have text like "artists" then you should rank higher when someone searches for "artists".

I too used to have thousands of links to my site from clients that would link to me. Then they all went away, links from search engines, clients, directories, forums, everything. My PR went to zero (white bar). Then a few months ago I got a bunch back and had a PR3. Very nice. Now today, I see that they've all gone away again... how depressing.

But my site has and STILL gets traffic, even if the amount goes up and down. And I have enough clients to keep me quite busy, so what care I about PR?

I only care a little that if a potential client looks at my site, they may think badly of my ability. Not much I can do about that. Well, ok, I guess I could get my new site completed and launched since it's about three years overdue... I just need to find the time.

So, while Page Rank is interesting and some people have turned it into a form of religion, I think it's pretty over-rated and subject to change without notice, as it has been several times in the past.

While links from un-related sites my help your PR, I also think it makes sense to get them from related sites and don't expect more than the traffic those links can directly bring you.

Sounds like we have the same philosophy.

If you are getting clients / sales then does it truly matter what the pr numbers are?

I do think it's good if future customers can find you by typing in your keywords in the SEs, but (at least for me) I've found word of mouth advertising the best promotional tool ever.

Sorry to hear you're having a rollercoaster ride with your pr. I'm sure though that good content and good customers will straiten it all out for you.

... and thanks so much for the explination! That does help clear it up. Laughing out loud

It seems that the driving force behind a good PR isn't a great technical ability with SEO, it's more like being good at what you do, and having a product which is remarkable - leading to word of mouth advertising and subsequent links to your site from other related sites.

Karen, you appear to be a Google success story without even knowing it! This is a good thing, people looking for the specialised market you are catering for will find your site. Specialisation and creating a product which is worth mentioning is all we have left in this swamped online realm, too few people realise this!

Interesting that your PR is so low, but you are still getting visits Christian, have your stats lowered since the rollercoaster started?

And Andy, thanks for the links - I try to avoid using IE so these will be a great help! Laughing out loud

There's a number of things you can do with a useful thing like that. I would at least sell advertising on the site. I'm not sure, but to me I think it's a time saver that people will like. Maybe sell access to the tool, $10 for a month...?

Or you can just let people use it for free... nothing wrong with that... Smiling

JeevesBond:

I'm glad you asked, I had not really noticed the traffic had changed, but in looking back this year I see that I was averaging about 2,200 visitors a month until May, when my traffic went down to about 1,700 and now last month it was 1,587.

I don't know when I got back my PR and now lost it again. Both happened in the past 2-3 months. I am more convienced than ever that Google does not like old, stale sites, and that would describe mine... most of it is about 3 years old.

Sigh... I really do need to get around to finishing my new site and get it up there...
