This may sound like an odd request. but it isn't I promise.

I used to have my domain (davidjaymz.com) set up as a blog and after a number of years of blogging I got bored and figured I'd use the domain for something else, now I've started that something else (a photography portfolio type website) but I'm still not totally happy with it so want to work on it some more, but thats another story.

what I've noticed is that I'm still getting lots of links and hits from things that aren't on the site any more. Is there a way to totally remove myself from google and the other search engines so I can start again with none of these latent hits for things that aren't there anymore?

I'd love to be able to take myself down to zero hits a month and then work back towards where i wanna be with people actually coming for the right reasons.

Any hints and suggestions are welcome.

Thanks in advance

I'm pretty sure you can do it with Google, I've done it before, I'm not too sure about any other search engines though.

If the pages are returning a 404 (page not found) response then they will be removed eventually.

But don't knock the natural links, use them. Catch them with a custom 404 and use 301 redirects to keep the link pop they carry with them.

Use the hits to your advantage, as suggested use a 404 but instead of steering them else where, just put something like "I'm sorry the page you are looking for is no longer here ... but since you're here why not check out my portfolio, you never know when you'll be needing a photographer ..." kind of thing.
Even if you are rebuilding your site you can still just link to a page, a sample so to speak of whats coming up or just what you offer.

Some good suggestions... but its not just people I'd like to visit my site. its people who used to visit my site for one reason, and i don't need their "custom" anymore. its also to the point where my non-existent referrer page is getting hit 100's of times a day even with various .htaccess rules in place.
I guess my problem isn't with the SE's (i know they'll drop links when they can no longer find them) its the porn sites and latent links people have left all over the shop.

You can ask to get your site removed from any search engine. Data Protection Act baby.
