I have been advised that there are tools that one can use to find your ranking on google. Has anyone here used such tools and could you recommend any?

Doesn't that just measure PR? Not your ranking.
The best way to check your ranking in a search engine, Alison, is to go to that search engine, type in your keyword, and go through the pages until you find your site. Make an excel spreadsheet to track the rankings. I started doing that a few months ago and it works great. You can see how your rank is changing over time and see if you are improving.

If you use FireFox browser - you can download extensions that adapt within your browser for convenience. Some of the ones I use for my job is SEO Quake - you can customize this toolbar with Google PageRank, pages indexed in Google, links pointing into your site from Google, Yahoo pages indexed, Yahoo backlinks, Yahoo Directory listing, DMOZ listing, Alexa rank........
Everytime I access a site or page - all of the above metrics are automatically fed to my browser viewing abilities.
If you are not analyzing site metrics on a regular basis, I wouldn't go to the trouble; however, this is the best SEO tool all in one place!
BTW, pluging your keywords into Google, Yahoo, & MSN is one of the best ways to find your Search Engine Results Pages placements (SERPs).......but if you like the idea of having this information automated - try these handy tools from Jim Boykin and his crew.
Good Luck! and Happy Holidays!
