I have been creating a number of sites just using title pages and i never used meta tags such as keywords and description. i now realised that someone advised that many pages goes into similar ones shown by google.
so, do i need to use meta tags? is not using meta tags hurt my se rankings?

Yes, meta tags imo are still important. google gives description using meta description. msn uses them. So use them

They're essential but not important if that makes any sense. Do have them, but don't stress out about it too much because most SE's dont' actually use them to rank sites anymore. They might use it to find out what your site topic is but that's about it. There was way too much spamming going in the keywords so most SE's have just stopped using them.
As "designer" said, display the description in the results. So the description is important more for people who are reading it and deciding whether to click on your link or the next one.

Yep! like everyone is saying. They are a good thing. When people search for keywords if your site doesn't have them in there you get found. Simple as that....pretty much. Plus It adds uniqueness to your pages.

Adds uniquness to your page???? that's a new one!
That doesn't make sense - no keywords means you WILL get found??? Maybe you meant to say WON't get found, but either way, the statment isn't right. Everything I've read about SEO recently indicates that meta keywords have very little significance in SE algorighms.
Unless, of course, you were referring to keywords in a more general sense. If you're targetting a highly competitive market it is important to focus on a set of keywords to target in the SE's. These should go in your title tag, page headers, and body text. Meta keywords too, but the page text and title are much more important.

In the second part of your message. Yes that is what I was talking about. Keywords are important especially for SEO.

Keywords in Meta Tags should not be prioritized for SEO. You can use meta keywords in your spare time and keep them very relevant to the page content as right use of Meta keywords does not harm. Top search engines like Google don't give much importance to Meta Keywords anymore, they just use content on your site instead to rank it. But Meta Keywords are still used by smaller search engines, so it's better to use them that not at all.
