Please can you help me I am about to launch a dating website in a few months

Now ive been told to use long keywords at first as I will rank quicker for e.g.

UK dating singles in the Manchester area
UK speed dating for UK online dating singles

As in time I will rank for say UK dating or UK speed dating but this will take time is this true?

Also please can you tell me how many one way links is safe to make each month?

I think around 35 will do

This will be broke down to

18 page rank 1-2
11 page rank 3-4
5 page rank 5-6
1 page rank 7-8 depending on price I might get an extra page rank 5-6

This will be done every month

Please can you tell me if I am right thanks Ricky

Well, I'm not very focused on SEO, but I do know that users tend to search using multiple keywords than just one... with the exception of your name.

My suggestion would be to include your site's name as a keyword (in it's many forms: mysite, mysite.com, etc), and then use keywords of maybe 3 or 4 words in length.

Ranking in search engines usually takes awhile to rise, especially in the case of Google, who doesn't directly use keywords to rank you.

I'm not sure what you mean by 'one way links' that are 'safe to make each month'... are you talking about just randomly linking to other sites? Because that is seen as 'bad' or 'inappropriate' by many people. If you look up the huge problem BMW had with Google, you'll find that they had 'invisible' words on their page (the same color as their page's background) in order to increase their ranking and position in different searches...and Google Blacklisted them.

Did that help?

I'm not a big fan of one way links, or links in general, especially if they have nothing to do with the content of the site. If they are related then your basically sending your members to your competitors.

I strongly believe content alone will rank you well, and from personal experience it does.
I'll give you an example;
I'm building a custom CF Bedford van at present, here in NZ.
I made a website mainly for the engineer to follow my process but instead it's gained quite a following. Do a search for this site of mine using any of the keywords I used in the first sentence above to describe what I am doing.

I do have a links page but not many links on it, but the ones I do link to don't link to me, the link on the index page I must admit was put there to boost their profile. If you have the google tool bar (could just be on firefox) you can view the "backwards links", which is who is linking to me, there aren't many there but this site is ranked very highly using any combination of the above keywords.
Don't use msn because I block them.

Some people are like slinkies, they dont really serve any purpose but they still bring a smile to your face when you push them down the stairs ...

It's a totally different story when you're trying to rank a dating site. Dating is so highly competitive, you have to have one way links. And one-way links are the way to go for SE's now. The great thing about them is that it is much harder to get them using unnatural methods. You have to have something worth linking to. If you don't, there is almost no point in building the site.

When he's talking about "safe" linking he is probably referring to google's tracking of links over time. If they think you're getting too many links too fast they may think you're a spammer.

My opinion is that with dating sites it's probably better to focus on a niche anyway. So if you work on keywords and target your site to a specific demographic or specific geographical region you might be more successful. Then you can branch out into other areas.

The other key is that you can't spam keywords. You can't just put up a web page with a list of keywords on it (which is what currently appears at the URL in your signature). Google's not going to want to rank that. The big secret of SEO is actually not a secret at all: SE's want to find content that is good for people. They want to be able to match the searcher's terms as well as possible. A list of keywords is not good for people, and won't be useful to Google either.

You're not going to get a lot of "black hat" advice here, if that's what you're looking for Smiling

Mate, You couldn't be more wrong if you tried.

For yet another dating site among millions it won't matter if you get 1 link a week or 10,000 links a day,
You will have nothing unique or even remotely new for search engines to even waste the tiniest amount of time indexing, never mind ranking your pages.
Hope you didn't pay a lot for your turnkey site.
'cos whatever it was, you'd better also have a large wallet to pay for the PPC to drive traffic for the first 4 years or so.

Okay, thanks for the explaination. That was a bit of a rude response you got on that site!

The best way to link build is to have something people will want to link to. To get links for a site like yours you'll probably want content. Articles or tools that are written to appeal to people who can link. Social networking sites are also a good way to find people who can link to you. Think about what kind of content you can write to appeal to them (hint: people on Digg like tech-related stuff. you could have a series of articles on dating for geeks. Make sure it's well written to appeal to that audience).

You would also want to do some keyword research to find out what you should be targetting. Then try to work in those words without being too obvious about it. I think most SEO's would say that you need to be careful about putting in too many keywords. Keep them in a few strategic locations (page title and tag being the most important), and try some variations or synonyms as well.

I really like the site I linked to above, SEOmoz. I highly recommend reading their blog if you want to learn about SEO. They also have a great beginner's guide to SEO and a list of Google ranking factors.
