Hi please bear with me i;m very new to all this and may seem 'thick' but i just dont get it!
I did a search on Wordtracker, it didnt give any results for my actual search term but gave other terms and one of them came up as follows;

'This has a KEI of 729.000 and is therefore an excellent keyword to target. A gift in fact as its KEI is over 400!'

So I thought BINGO, then went on over to Overture keyword selector tool and NOTHING, it wasnt recognised at all

Went onto Google Adwords - again nothing, the search term isnt registered, i looked at the adwords cost - 10p for position 1-3

So how is this search term a GIFT?? No one will search for it, i may show up as no.1 but going by wordtracker only 27 times in 90 days!!

I'm confused as to how this works and how this keyword term is a 'gift'!
Am I missing something here? Confused

Keywords should be based on your page text. If a word dosen't appear in your page text it will do you little good, even if it is the most popular word on the internet.

In fact Google pays little attention to your meta keywords, but instead selects them from relative to your website words, that are included in your text.

Your page title is far more important then your keywords, and should contain the best one, or two keywords relative to your sites content.

According to Overture, "gifts" was searched 637199 times last month. The only keyword phrase searched more was "gift ideas", 915274 times. I made the terms plural because Overture does not, and it is more likely that "gifts" was searhed, not "gift".

It would be almost impossible to show on page one of SE's for "gifts" and "gift ideas".

I would target 1 "impossible dream term" and a few smaller terms to increase traffic, like:

Count: 103898
Search Term: birthday gift

Count: 101517
Search Term: anniversary gift

Count: 80982
Search Term: christmas gift

Think of it like this. If you have "pet Rock" that is searched 20 times a week, but you have it on page one. and you have "gift" on page 3 that is searched 915274 times... The quality of the leads comming to your site from "Pet Rock" are much more focused than the general "gift" word. Get more specific in your key terms. They may be searched less frequently, but these people know exactly what they are looking for.

Here is a nother scenario for you..

You can always purchase 10,000 visitors for $30 as advertised online in numerous places.
But if you knew before hand that these 10,000 would do nothing on your site.. Would you still
purchase??

The fact is targeting rules.... I would much rather bring in 100 visitors a month and sell 3 products then 10,000 visitors and sell none..
