Is there any method I can use on my site that will tell me what keywords people used at search engines to get to my site?

Up until a while a go WebTrends Live had the feature in their free counter but its gone now Sad One other thing, its got to be free!!

I can script ColdFusion to tell me the referring page but just not the keywords...

Any ideas?

Most web log file analysis programs should be able to provide a list of keywords that were used. That information is sent to the web server with the reffering URL, which should be the SE web page. Along with google.com it should also have things like "keyword=fish&hook&lind&sinker". The report program should be able to identify these words and present them in the report.

I use WebTrends professional and it does it. You can also use Analog, which is free. THere is also Funnel web and buszzsaw. Those are the main ones that I know, but it would be great if others could add to this list.

Of course, if you don't have access to your log files, it is less fun to be you.... Smiling

Oops, missed the part about free... but Analog should give you what you want. If you're good with CF I think there is a tag that can grab the refferrer, but you'll have to parse out the keywords.

Thanks,
Christian

Well, if you've got the log files, then the only question is if your ISP is recording the referrer information. If they are then you've got it.

I can't remember if Analog reports on the referrers for sure, but I think it does.

Is there a program that will analyse these log files?

BTW, have you got the links to Analog and Buzzsaw?

http://www.analog.cx/ but I'm now less sure it has keywords. It should say somewhere on the site.

You may have better luck with Buzzsaw, which is not free, but does have a 30 trial, but also has a "beta tester" program where you can earn a free copy of the program if you do enough testing AND documentation.

This is definitly worth a look. I just found this program YESTERDAY and have no connection to the company.

Thanks,
Christian

Also try installing AXS on your site. It will capture the search strings too.

personally, if u need to get a program to tell u what keywords are being used to reach ur site, YOU NEED ANOTHER HOST.

i've had several host (paid) and only one didn't provide that info as part of my stats.
