There are lots of ways to build good backlinks.

1) Directory submission in relevant category.
2) Article Submission
3) Signature links from your niche forums.
4) Social Bookmarking and web2.0 sites like hubpages and squidoo.
5) Blog posting and post comments on relevant blogs.

try to look for do follow websites that were relevant to yours and link back to them, also there are big differences between PR N/A and PR 1-6 so quality links are far more better than the quantity of your backlinks, social bookmarking sites are fine to index you website quickly on search engines, do pay much attention to directory submission for most of these are devalued sites except for yahoo directory.

Actually i`m not expert in this case, but maybe it will help you.
You can do link building but relevant with your site, so you get quality backlink. Submit directory maybe if you have budget you can buy text link ads in site with high PR like 4, 5, 6.

first is search for web owners who has the same niche as yours (and its much better if they got higher PR) and offer them a link back, also target do follow blogs and forums (there are lots of information on the web just google it), social bookmarking and directory submission also help in getting one way backlinks..

I haven't done this myself, but people also say link exchanges with relevant sites and press releases.

Victorsmith covered a few good methods, one more is .edu backlinks
google search for: site:.edu inurl:forum intitle:your-sites-theme
that string will return a list of .edu forums with the same theme as your website. now its just a case of finding the dofollow ones and joining up.

If you use firefox you can get the seomoz toolbar and it will highlight nofollow links for you.

There are many ways to build backlinks. You can post on forums, comments on dofollow blog, bookmark your site pages, join social networks, etc.

To build backlinks, don't over do it. Just build a considerable amount of links in a month. Remember it is quality over quantity.
