Hi there

I have noted that for the same keyword my website is positioned in yahoo and google with a huge difference....

example some key is n1 in yahoo and not even listed in the top 100 in google or viceversa.

How can that be?

Because they are different companies with different algorythms. Things that are important in yahoo may not be in google and vice versa.

Actually Yahoo appears to put more value on page content, while Google prioritize and give value on backlinks. But is suggest to use a combination of both optimized content and relevant backlinks in order to achieve and maintain a high ranking.

Google also seem to give more and more importance to website 'age' while Yahoo doesn't as much. Domain name is also a very important factor in bot Y! and G and I think that Y gives more importance to file / directory names than G.

You've got to remember that any one who creates a website is doing so for their audience. It is more than suggested to use a combination of both it is vital, content is king and regardless of how well ranked your site is with out good content it is irrelevant.

I think far too many people put too much emphasis on creating and marketing their site for search engines, when they should be creating it and marketing it for their audience. By all means you need to get a good number of quality back links to rank well in Google for competitive keywords; however you should market for the people and get back-links as a result.

I know a few companies that have barely spent a day marketing their company’s site for the search engines, but by marketing it to their audience as a result they have picked up first positions in Google for competitive keywords.

I'm not saying people should forget about optimising their site for search engines or that it isn't important, I’m simply saying a lot of people forget why they are doing it in the first place. Once last note SEO CHAT has a number of helpful resources on optimisation for different SE's

Because search engine has use different basis and different algo. Some criteria might have high value on google but less in yahoo.

Another thing is that I think Yahoo is a lot less fussy about manipulated links (paid links, reciprocals, spam, low quality directories etc.). They do place importance on links but they aren't as fussy about them as Google is... or at least they tend to be a bit behind in how agressive they're being about certain tactics.

I agree with the previous message Smiling

Thanks Megan,

Just another note that Google has heavily cracked down on paid link backs, I used to be quite sceptical about it as I don't understand how Google could possibly define if a link had been paid for or not...

But in any case you need to avoid it at all costs; the latest pr update arguably proved that Google disapproves of paid backlines as a number of sites selling them have gone from middle pr's 3-5 to 0!

The reason I'm stating this is that a lot of the people in this forum still think it's a good way to boost your SE ranking and placement, well actually it's a good way to decrease it and loose some money at the same time! I think it worked in the past but it certainly doesn't anymore.

yes, google is extremely aggressive and penalizes any manipulation done to increase the
page rank,

yahoo is a little bit relaxed, i guess...

Yahoo is easier than Google for having higher rankings and this can be done faster. Google, on the other hand takes longer to give rankings to sites But the traffic difference can be huge.

it's normal to have different result in every SE because each search engines uses different algos and ways on how search relevancy is calculated.

Google use more "intelligence" than Yahoo. Its Algorithms, apparenttly, is more complex and take more parameters. Some sites i worked, appears at the top of Yahoo and so far in Google, and vicebersa.

For SERP, both onpage and offpage factors are important. Google values the offpage more while yahoo likes the onpage factor.

Both of them have very different algorithms and it's natural not to rank well on both. If you want to improve your rankings in Google then you need to get more relevant links to your pages. while Yahoo has a preference for content over links.

Here's a good resources on how the major search engines differ:

Why the Vast Majority of SEOs No Longer Target Individual Search Engines

If you want to know why you're ranking higher in one engine than another that's a good place to start.

Google gives to vote a website for a many resions, like: Age of domain, Link Popularity, Meta details etc. but Yahoo gives vote in different criteria.
