Is there any way to back in time on an engine to find out how a certain website ranked, say a year ago, or two years ago. The purpose would be to research how a website has improved or not improved its ranking over a certain number of years.

Their is no way thet I am aware of. Alexa (powered by Google) has the "Wayback Machine" to view the history of how sites looked in the past (cached), but this doesn't show how they ranked. Sorry.
