Hi all, hope some one can answer this. On google if i search for site:http://anewshop.co.uk it only returns 1 link if I search for site:http://www.anewshop.co.uk it returns nothing, i know that using www r not makes a difference but my question is this.....

why does it only return 1 hit? Googlebot has shown up as viewing a lot of pages (over 1000) in my logs but yet it only shows the domain when i do the site: thingy

that happens with me. its just their new style I think. type this following code into google to see how many of your pages have been indexed.

site:yourdomain.com

wouldn't worry about it, just keep checking your rankings and improving.

Is google still penilising sites with "dodgy" links pointing to them? I heard from Web Pro News that ppl were using this as a loop hole to aggresively knock down their competitors listings... Their suggestion was for search engines to simply ignore "dodgy" links... makes sense...

I may regret asking, but what is a "dodgy" link?

I mean if a site with a bad reputation links to you... for example, link farms or sites using keywords excessively or hidden text.... does google still penilize your site or does it just ignore the link?

Mike,

First of all, the word "reputation" is best measured with Google's PageRank
and/or by SERPs.

Therefore, reputations do not range from good to bad, per se, but from 0 to
10 on Google's Toolbar and/or from 1 to 1,000 in the SERPs. Yes, the Toolbar
numbers 1 - 10 are an abstraction of the exact PageRank, and yes, the
Toolbar number is one to three months lagging the actual value, but it's all
we got.

A link coming to your homepage either has some value, (PageRank), or it does
not have some value. Or it is high in Google SERPS or it is not.

If a page with hidden text or excessive keywords has a PR4 and links to you,
you get your share of that PR4. If Google wants to penalize the PR of that
incoming page by reducing it to PR3, then your page gets it's share of the
PR3.

If Google wants to penalize that incoming page by dropping it in the SERPs
from #5 to #500, or #1000, or completely off the SERPs, you still get your
share of the incoming page's PR.

Your page is never, (DELIBERATELY), penalized by Google for incoming links.

All that is just my opinion.

The WPN article is old speculation and should be treated as such. It has never been shown to work (and many have tried) . If it were the case anyone who's site gets picked by the thousands of scraper sites there are around would be penalised.

You won't get penalised for something you have no control over.
Now if the SEs can find a connection between the owner/operator of the inbound linking site and the target site it will be a different story.

You can not guage your success by the visits of search engine spiders.

I see you your site has no backlinks showing with Google and only four
with Yahoo.

I think you should focus on that.

Google do not penalise sites for inbound links, only if you link back to these "dodgy" (to Google) pages.

They may or may not count. I assume by link farm you are actually referring to FFA (free for all) link pages rather than real link farms.
