I have submitted what I think is a good website on to the open directory and waited... and waited and after nine months still have nothing - does anyone know if they simply do not like Flash sites or whether there are any tricks on terms of how to apply?

I filled out the forms honestly and following their guidelines but do not want to submit again in case they penalise me for that too!

any advice would be appreciated!

Get to know one of the editors, you'll have a better chance that way *cough* bribery *cough*.

I only have two sites in there. The way I got in was to submit to the local categories. Don't submit to any of the major cats, go as far up the category tree as you can. There are fewer sites submitting into those categories, and the editors are trying to move to bigger categories so they're actively doing their job.

Even though DMOZ is total crap now, it still carries some weight in the major engines. It's good to be in there. Plus a lot of people scrape/mirror DMOZ so you get even more links (crappy ones though).

Thanks teammatt3, sounds about right *cough*rubbish*cough*

Will try it again as regionally as possible...

DMOZ is so annoying, but worth persevering for the reason Matt says, people use their data. Not exactly quality backlinks but it only takes a minute to submit...

DMOZ is getting worse each day and this is a fact that many webmasters have complained about in the last 6-8 months. I even heard discussions related to friends of DMOZ moderators being accepted in front of other more relevant web resources and such things that I preffer to stay away from. There are for sure many other methods to get decent quality niche backlinks rather than DMOZ.

I have been thinking about submitted my site to DMOZ for a while now, it's a decent site which has taken ages to build up, but I've heard the stories about neglected categories and waiting for ages to hear anything, so I haven't bothered.

One of my site has actually made it into the directory. The funny thing is I didn't even submit it! I would love to thank the person that did though, it's been a steady stream of pennies for me for a couple of years, and I'm sure the DMOZ link helped.

elena29 I'd be very interested to know the techniques you use to get decent quality niche backlinks rather than DMOZ?

Thanks,
Tom

I havn't been able to get listed in DMOZ either, I'be been wondering how important it actually is to be listed in the directory, or would it make little or no difference to my site?
