Do you have any examples of images you've done this with and the corresponding results in Google Images?
This actually interests me. I don't know what's out there, but I've not really read much on getting your images into Google Images.

I've read that they also look at the text around the image, not just the alt text. And possibly the image file name too.

image results are a combination of the page title, image alt tag and the content wrapped around the text. To improve your chances of your image showing up in serps, work on all three of the above.
