I dunno, but it's pretty obvious that Google (and all search engines) are just trying to catalogue content in the most useful manner for the users that use it (that's you and me).
The SEO crowd have a different focus; they want Google to place their content at the top without any regard to it's usefulness to the user who is trying to search for a specific term.
In the past we used to find pages at the top of our search list with no possible relation to our search terms.
If you typed something like 'Travel' in the search box, the chances are the top 20 returned pages were all seeking to sell you cheap Canadian Pharmaceutical goods, for God's sake!
Where's the use in that?

I don't think google will hate SEO. SEO is used to optimized pages according to search queries. SEO helps to give accurate and relevant results to the searches which is made. Google will always love and support SEO in a ethical way to make their search result more accurate and relevant.

Yeah, but only if the SEO is used in a relevant manner.
If your website is selling Canadian Pharmaceutical product, it's not really good to pack it with keywords designed to hijack somebodies search session, is it?
If you keep getting irrelevant results you're going to change your search engine, aren't you?
Maybe you'll try out Microsoft Bing?

SEOmoz had an interesting article last week about how Google seems to be watching certain high profile SEO's. It would be a good way for them to find any loopholes in their algorithm.
I wouldn't think this has anything to do with deliberately frustrating SEO's or testing their abilities. They just want to weed out any deliberate manipulation.
I don't think they "hate" SEO's at all, although maybe the black hat kind
They have done a lot to provide information through the Webmaster Central blog and Matt Cutts' site. They just need to serve the needs of their primary audience first and deliver the most relevant results. SEO's often tend to work against that.

Google does not hate except Black hat techniques, actually google needs SEO at the mean time alot, unless they would not have released their SEO guidelines, SEO help google determine the website better, and the best website wins, which is most probably, the website with the best content and quality, which will gain more backlinks, and hence higher rankings.

IMHO i think Google does not hate SEO at all, maybe a cold war is in progress between those two.
And surely Black Hat SEO is a big no no to Google because you will surely be penalized.

I don't know any reason while a search engine should hate SEO, as is one of the key reasons why search engines have become as effective as they currently are in refining their results.

I believe that Google would prefer that a website that has really good content and that please its users will be fairly happy if you were to use White Hat Search Engine Optimization in order to obtain a better website ranking within the Search Engine Results.
I do not see why Google or any other Search Engines would have an issue with it.
I believe that the Search Engines hate Black Hate based Search Engine Optimization.

Why would google hate SEO. Google dont encourage black hat SEO, automated and illegal stuffs.
If you do SEO work in a white hat way with quality and and good content with relevant backlinks , google will always give you good value.

They don't hate seos, they just keep an eye on them, and there's an intricate game continuously going on between seos trying to find sensitive spots with algos that allow a certain degree of manipulation (seo is by default manipulation IMO), whereas google folks try to get people on the track most convenient for google the search engine (consider matt cutts - you have to apply a grain of salt for best results).

short answer: yes.
medium answer: I agree with davecoventry.
long answer: Google is ok with "reasonable and legitimate" promotion... but what is that. I think too many seo types follow the herd and push the borders... and that's what gets them into trouble... and they witness the wrath of google!

Nice Article! But not all SEO’s are that bad to be hated by Google. I think Google is just doing it’s job to offer users the best results they can get. While SEO’s too are trying their best to have their websites on SERPs.

Google and other search engines do their job well in providing good (clean) content and search engine optimists are just trying (mostly) to get their site better attention with the search engines.

Thanks for sharing this article. Now I know the answer. In many aspects business is business, being a smart one to handle what you called "business" is very nice way to describe your own business. The main point here is that you must use every intention as a good one. Always remember what you are doing is not for a bad cause it's for a good cause.

Google really can hate SEO, as SEO is right now...
Normally Google is looking at the websites quality by the reaction of people. Google is searching for the prime sources of information, and people reactions shows him if the information is good, so the website bust be informative, there shouldn't be wrong keywords and quality of the website must be high.
Like it is written in this article http://website-promotion-costs.com/internet_promotion_articles/seo_win_respect_of_main_search_engine.html:
1st practical SEO conclusion: The website has to be made by people.
2nd practical SEO conclusion: The contents of the website have to be original.
3th practical SOE conclusion: The Pagerank of the website is a consequence of the interest of the auditorium - visiting.
