Here's a good video from Rand Fishkin of SEOmoz about the value (or lack thereof) of web directories and more specifically, how and why these directories are of low value. It also touches on the way such sites would build PageRank and how that number is not an accurate indication of their value.

Watch this if a) you think directories are a good way to build links and b) you think PageRank is a good indicator of link value.

There's more information on that here: http://www.seomoz.org/blog/new-premium-services-link-directory-juicy-link-finder-tool-new-pricing (start reading under the first screenshot)

Here's another quote from Matt Cutts in a post about buying links:

Matt Cutts wrote:
Q: Hey, as long as we’re talking about directories, can you talk about the role of directories, some of whom charge for a reviewer to evaluate them?

A: I’ll try to give a few rules of thumb to think about when looking at a directory. When considering submitting to a directory, I’d ask questions like:

  • Does the directory reject urls? If every url passes a review, the directory gets closer to just a list of links or a free-for-all link site.
  • What is the quality of urls in the directory? Suppose a site rejects 25% of submissions, but the urls that are accepted/listed are still quite low-quality or spammy. That doesn’t speak well to the quality of the directory.
  • If there is a fee, what’s the purpose of the fee? For a high-quality directory, the fee is primarily for the time/effort for someone to do a genuine evaluation of a url or site.

Those are a few factors I’d consider. If you put on your user hat and ask “Does this seem like a high-quality directory to me?” you can usually get a pretty good sense as well, or ask a few friends for their take on a particular directory.

I would also say that if you or your client knows anything about the topic you should know where the good directories are for that topic.

Link directories bring a small amount of traffic while their main purpose is passing on the Google Page Rank juice to websites. A quality link directory is defined using many factors such as relevancy to the topic of your website, number of outbound links present at the page where your inbound link is coming from and last but not least page rank value of that specific page.

Directories are good one way link... If the directories is a quality directory it will bring traffic to sites included in the said directory.. Example the Yahoo, Yahoo is a quality directory....

May I point out that MrCat runs a paid directory site. Of course he thinks they work.

For those of you who do think that directories work (beyond basic indexing, and excepting the very high quality directories that are made for humans), I invite you to refute the points made in Mr. Fishkin's posts (particularly the one about the directories that were banned).

Directories can make website link popular and get top ranking in search engine. But you can't expect too much traffic from a directory just a little bit contribution to the improvement of your sites placement in SE.

i don't think half the directories are worth the effort that go into getting yourself included in them. dmoz, for instance, i decided is completely dead. but i also agree that yahoo is a good directory, and there are a few others too....

Directories is good if it's quality directories but if directories contains only unrelated sites then it's a waste.
