Is there a way of determining if one's website has been banned from the engines?
Or is just not listed at all?

not that I know of. try typing the url into searchy.com to see if it comes up on the top 10 SEs.

Make sure you've got links to the site, submitted it and then expect a wait of around 4-8 weeks or longer.

Using the name of my site "sinfulescortsusa" leaving off the www and com
I did a search on the following engines:
Google
Yahoo
MSN
Altavesta
Ask Jeeves
My site and some additional pages showed on all except Ask Jeeves.
What does this tell me, if anything?
Does this tell me anything regarding whether my site is banned or not?
Because, other than using this method, my site does not show anywhere.

No, your site is not banned. However, it appears that the search term 'escort' is extremely competitive. I think you are going to need a lot more backlinks to start competing in this search. Good luck!

Janet, why do you say my site has not been banned?

If your site shows up at all, it hasn't been banned. If it doesn't show up at all, even when you type in the domain name, it's been banned. I'm not an expert on SEO, but that's my understanding of the topic. I'm sure someone will correct me if that's wrong.

Your site shows a PR2 for the index page, it wouldn't show PR if Google had banned it.

Why do you think it might be banned? Because it isn't ranking well?

You need to do some serious reading on SEO, get other sites to link to you and accept the fact that you are hitting a hugely competitive adult sector and unless you can narrow your field it will take a long, long time to rank well if at all.

Have you thought about finding OTHER ways than this to make money off the internet??

Sorry to put in my 2 cents!

to check how many pages of your site a search engine has listed simply run the following operator into the search box

site:yoursitename.com this will tell the SE to provide a list and count of all the pages in its index (database). It is also a good way to find out how the SE's are getting on with spidering your site.

As has rightly been pointed out, if your banned, then it is doubtfull there will be any pages there, and also your PR value will likely be zeroed or greyed out.

A simple email to help@google.com asking if the site is penalised will also help, as they will tell you yes or no (don't expect anything beyond that though.

For search engines like MSN, Google and Yahoo, use site command. If no results are seen, either the site has been penalized or never has been indexed before.
