Can a sub-domain on a site be used in any way to help with your SE rankings?
ie: if i sell "widgets" and have domain xyz.com would a "widgets.xyz.com" subdomain help my rankings in searches of "widgets"??

if the site that uses widget.xyz.com has a good SEO and is submitted to search engines and is indexed, then it will work as an advantage... See these free web hosts like tripod, they have actual dot com site and a bunch of subdomains they offer for free, which helps them in return...
