Hi,
I am bit worried regarding back links, actually last week I checked my website back links which are more then 9000, yesterday I checked them again, and get shocked, these are only 4,932.

How come they become very few? I mean it’s a big drop. One thing I usually use “Link Popularity Check” Software to check the back links.

Could anyone explain, what happened?Confused

Thanks.

What is this software you're using? It's hard to say without being familiar with the tool you're using and how they're getting their numbers. Are Yahoo and Google showing similar drops?

its a free software version "Link Popularity Check 3.0.2", and i am not sure about the how they are getting the number of backlinks, but it only shows the results from (All teh Web, Alta Vista, Google, MSN/Live, and Yahoo), and i download this from http://www.CheckYourLinkPopularity.com Website. yahoo showing around 1200 backlinks and Google just showing 2 backlinks.

I tried a bunch of those on various sites and they all seem to be just pulling the link: data from different search engines (this is one of the ones I tried).

I take it the huge drop you saw was in the overall total not for any one particular engine? Google is showing only 2 links on link:. What does it say in your webmaster tools account?

So, why is this? Where were your links coming from before? Did you have a lot of low quality directory links? It's very possible that Google dropped those. What I'm finding going through the AllTheWeb link results is that a lot of these (actually, most of them) are duplicate content. Different site, sometimes a different intro, same design, mostly the same same content. It looks like Google dropped those pages.

A lot of reasons this could happen. Either your source is not reliable enough or the drop in the number of your inbound links are caused by certain changes in your site - content, broken links, off-page factors, etc. Have you tried using yahoo to check on your backlinks? I suggest you try it with a query info:yoursite.com

For checking Google backlinks in Google, you should register in Google Webmaster tools and check the backlinks there. You will see a more detailed sampling of the backlinks. It is not complete but it shows more info than what is available with the link: operator.

Backlinks will change depending on the updates of search engine. Remember it's not about the quantity of your links will improved your SERP but the quality of every links.

You can also try Yahoo Site Explorer or just make a query at Google - link:www.yoursite.com

Its using the free tool thats cuasing the problem they are all not very acurate to be honest and your better off just checking manually in the search engines yourself.

Google only ever show a very small selection of inbound links and they only update the list every few months when they do the PR update so its pretty pointless even looking at Google backlinks to be honest.

MSN seem to have stopped showing backlibnks again which is a shame cos back when then used to do it they were the best place to check your backlinks, ATM you only really have Yahoo which is worth checking and this can be done at Yahoo Site Exporer.
