I have heard that they are mostly nofollow links. Is blog commenting still a good way to get backlinks?

Not always! I get comments that are simple spam and I let the askimet filter deal with them. Other comments that contain links to related sites I let stand and hope that that site will place a link to mine.

Yes it does. Keep in mind that relevancy is the key. I suggest you also look for dofollow blogs as this will also help in PR. Just don't spam and make useful and relevant comments Wink

What did the article say, phil?

It is true that most blog comments are nofollowed, although there is a growing movement of people who are taking that out, either for everyone or just for regular commenters.

I think another benefit of commenting is that the other blogger can get to know who you are - especially people who don't get tons and tons of comments. Sometimes other readers will get to know who you are too, especially if theys ee your name on other blogs they read on the topic too. All of this means that commenting is good for building your reputation and spreading the word about you. If people get to know you they might visit your site and even link back to you or social bookmark your articles.

The article said that there are still blogs that use dofollow links in comments but finding one can be difficult and these still change so any list still needs to be checked.

There is a addon for google that will highlight all nofollow links on a page. This makes it easier to identify if the blogger doesn't openly say what method they use.

Do you use nofollow Megan?

I have a dofollow plugin right now that removes the nofollow for people who have commented at least 5 times. The plugin I'm using is called link love.

I figure that it's nice to reward people who participate regularly and if google doesn't want to count those links then they can detect them.

I think there are lists out there of blogs that dofollow - just a suspicion because I've seen random bursts of comments from strange people. Didn't get around to checking referrers.

And, for anyone reading, don't go and spam 5 comments on my blog just to get a backlink. If comments are spam they will be deleted.

Blog commenting is a nice way to get traffic instead of backlinks.Instead of blog commenting forum and article postings gets you backlinks provided the URL of your website is added to your signature. If your blog is submitted to social bookmarking or networking sites such as DIGG or DE..LI..CIOUS which are cached by the Google spiders on a daily basis you might just get a backlink when Google updates PR and backlinks.Getting a technorati account also helps.

There are lists of blogs that have dofollow floating about but an alternative method to find relative ones including using this search term in google:

KEY WORDS HERE "Remeber my personal information" "Notify me of follow-up comments"

So for example to look for blogs you can comment on for a niche site on coffee you'd enter:

Coffee "Remeber my personal information" "Notify me of follow-up comments"

Again, don't just spam the blogs, add useful comments.

I agree that even if a blog only allows for nofollow commenting, that it still can be worthwhile to comment -- because of direct traffic. Really seo is all about getting more traffic right? So if a comment is directing traffic to your site, it's okay if it's not giving you a higher ranking; it still is giving you *more* traffic.

Try searching for blogs with do follow and take not that it should be relevant so you can benefit on the traffic and you can increase you Page Rank as well. To increase traffic try not just to leave a comment in the comment section try to make it useful, helpful and with great sense so other readers may find your comment useful and visit that link that you provided.

blog commenting can really drive some traffic to your site but with my personal experience i just wanna say one thing ,beware of using the links in the comment, because the moderator may think it as a spam and consider you as a spammer ,once your link has put in spam list there are some softwares which will monitor the spam messages and will not allow your direct link to be posted anywhere.even google will penalize for such things.use your link unless untill it in necessary in the message.then you can ask me then how can i use my link? you just post a relevant comment to that matter and give the link in website url ,if your comment is attractive definitely people show some interest on your comment that will automatically drive some comment to your site

It depends on the blog you are posting on, if they have no-follow tags then the link doesnt pass on any value but still gets followed by the search engines also if you are contributing to someone's blog you really should leave a quality comment or not bother posting.

Well, after reading what's been said it seems like commenting is a good idea whether or not the blog is dofollow, because if it is in your niche, then you have a chance of getting traffic to your blog. I haven't started blogging quite yet, but I may start commenting on other blogs just to get started. It seems logical to contribute to your niche if you want to get noticed. Thanks for the info guys!

It makes sense that you wouldn't want to put your own url in a post unless it directly relates to the topic and adds some value to the overall comment-discussion. But I've noticed that some people will have their nickname be: "their name - their company name" I just wanted to run that by you guys -- regardless of the blog being dofollow or nofollow, this isn't too much self-promotion right?

Keep in mind that comment always to theme related and do follow blogs.

Yes blog commenting helps to increase inbound links, But you should check weather the blog allows do follow attribute or not. If you comment on no follow attribute blogs , You are not going to get any thing of it. So make a list of do follow blogs, try to write relevant comment on the topic or relate to the post. Otherwise blog admin won't approve your post.

Dofollow = can increase traffic, pr as well as rankings.

Yeah, I agree with Megan, Nofollow links can still be useful, because they can help you build up your reputation. Nowadays, there is too much information online to read it all, so you have to rely on trustworthy sources. One way to do that is by social referencing, finding people you can trust to deliver you important information. And blog commenting is one way to build up that trust.

Blog commenting is certainly a good method to develop backlinks. But these backlinks have to come from top rated blogs and not underrated blogs. Be selective when commenting on a blog. A backlink from a poorly rated blog will fetch no significance, infact, people don't find interest in such blogs.

Also don't be greedy when building links by blog commenting. It has to be done systematically and gradually.

Use Firefox Nonofollow addon to check for nofollow links - once installed, rightclick the mouse and select nonofollow. I think this is one of the strongest points about blog commenting. If you are active on popular blogs that are respected in your field, then people will notice that you are an active participant in the community, and that can help build trust. On the other hand though, it's tough to get noticed if you post on blogs that normally have many comments. You have to find a way to make your comments stand out.

Yeah blog comments are good source of getting backlinks, but one thing here is that most of the blogs are giving no follow, so search for those do follow blogs and most important your comment should be real. it shouldn't look like a spam. Do relevant comment and get what you need is a good backlink.Well i guess people out here is aware of "u Comment i Follow".

I recently commented on my own blog, and noticed that the links I inserted automatically had the nofollow attribute added in there. I guess I could edit them out if I wanted to, but it doesn't really matter to me either way. I'm pretty sure that all of the nickname links are not nofollow though.

Anyway, seeing the variation makes me realize that commenting for a backlink isn't the way I want to do it. I'll comment if I want someone else to be interested in what I have to say, and find out more about my own site.

Yes, I am sure you can get more traffic from DOFOLLOW Blogs. I have some good experience with it. However, it is hard to find DOFOLLOW blogs with good PR. But If you can get find the things that will be great.... That will work well rather than other ways(Forums postings, article submissions or etc). Actually, I was on 25th place of google for a particular keyword, I ahve done DOFOLLOW BLOG comments which PR is greater than 4, I have got within top 10 within few days... Once the links are cached... So, blog commenting is very hard to do due to it is hard to find blogs, but the output is really great....

I posted this elsewhere:

From Rand Fishkin at SEOMoz, in 12 Easy Mistakes that Plague Newcomers to the SEO Field:

12. Chasing DoFollow Blogs

When did dofollow blogs become the link acquisition practice du jour? Honestly, I have yet to see competitive rankings earned from a dofollow blog link strategy, and the focus on it to the exclusion of other, more valuable and scalable linking tactics is a cause for concern. When you're starting a link building campaign, remember the immortal words "nothing worth having comes easy."

Posting blog comments is yet another cheap and easy but low quality, low yielding link building strategy. If your site sucks and you can't get actual good links to your site, this sort of thing might be better than nothing. Using blogs for reputation building is a different strategy, as I described above. Unfortunately, though, it seems like most people don't think of it this way.

(And blogs that do follow links probably aren't the best quality sites to get links from anyway)

I have to agree that commenting on a DoFollow blogs is another way of getting much backlinks especially commenting on a high PR blogs. Just be sure to write a useful comment wherein the author could get something new ideas from you so not to be called as spammer. Also following the feeds of the author much better so as to build a trusting relationship among bloggers.

I simply wnat to say that's not possible that a nofollow blog give your website a back link in search engine. Nofollow is not a tag in HTML its an attribute which works of restricting search engine to crowl your website so how can it possible that a search engine count any nofollow link in your website's back link.
Thanks

I get very confused with this subject some say it’s so important to have back links I would agree. BUT this is important you must have quality back links to your site. For example I have an online gifts store I sell birthday wedding and {link removed} if I linked to say betting or gambling site this is not relevant! However if I linked to jewellery site or Christmas site that would be known as a quality back link. So be careful. Or also keep away from companies who charge for bulk back links they could do more harm than good.

I hope this helps

If you go for .aspx pages(blogs with .aspx extensions instead of .htm or etc), most of those blogs offer DOFOLLOW links.

when you get backlinks from blog comments, you have to make sure that there are not much spammy comments as well as less outbound links. Then, only the backlinks from such a blog will be useful and will be more effiective. Otherwise, it may lead to get penalty from google Smiling

Google "Dofollow" if you want a list of blogs that don't use rel nofollow. There's a movement of sorts Smiling Anyway, I wouldn't worry about it too much though. It's a good practice to post anytime you have something to contribute. The key is not to spam. I'd encourage anyone to not focus on PR. Your link is as much of an ad than it is a backlink. Post where-ever, and when-ever you can, just keep it relevant to the conversation and use targeted keywords.

Just because a blog uses no-follow doen't mean posting is void of benefit. If you focus on links being well placed highly relevant ads, you'll likely do better than if you try to relate everything to PR.

Cheers
