Not always! I get comments that are simple spam and I let the askimet filter deal with them. Other comments that contain links to related sites I let stand and hope that that site will place a link to mine.
Yes it does. Keep in mind that relevancy is the key. I suggest you also look for dofollow blogs as this will also help in PR. Just don't spam and make useful and relevant comments
I found a useful article on this but cannot remember where the hello I found it from but I do have a printed copy. Let me know if you are still interested and I can send across the main points.
It is true that most blog comments are nofollowed, although there is a growing movement of people who are taking that out, either for everyone or just for regular commenters.
I think another benefit of commenting is that the other blogger can get to know who you are - especially people who don't get tons and tons of comments. Sometimes other readers will get to know who you are too, especially if theys ee your name on other blogs they read on the topic too. All of this means that commenting is good for building your reputation and spreading the word about you. If people get to know you they might visit your site and even link back to you or social bookmark your articles.
The article said that there are still blogs that use dofollow links in comments but finding one can be difficult and these still change so any list still needs to be checked.
There is a addon for google that will highlight all nofollow links on a page. This makes it easier to identify if the blogger doesn't openly say what method they use.
I have a dofollow plugin right now that removes the nofollow for people who have commented at least 5 times. The plugin I'm using is called link love.
I figure that it's nice to reward people who participate regularly and if google doesn't want to count those links then they can detect them.
I think there are lists out there of blogs that dofollow - just a suspicion because I've seen random bursts of comments from strange people. Didn't get around to checking referrers.
And, for anyone reading, don't go and spam 5 comments on my blog just to get a backlink. If comments are spam they will be deleted.
Blog commenting is a nice way to get traffic instead of backlinks.Instead of blog commenting forum and article postings gets you backlinks provided the URL of your website is added to your signature. If your blog is submitted to social bookmarking or networking sites such as DIGG or DE..LI..CIOUS which are cached by the Google spiders on a daily basis you might just get a backlink when Google updates PR and backlinks.Getting a technorati account also helps.
Blog commentting is a good sources of backlinks, provided you make useful and informative comments on a related theme. Making sure that the blog must have "do follow" link before you make some comments for you to have a link pointing to your site....

There are lists of blogs that have dofollow floating about but an alternative method to find relative ones including using this search term in google:
KEY WORDS HERE "Remeber my personal information" "Notify me of follow-up comments"
So for example to look for blogs you can comment on for a niche site on coffee you'd enter:
Coffee "Remeber my personal information" "Notify me of follow-up comments"
Again, don't just spam the blogs, add useful comments.
