Yes, if you build a good quality site which generates backlinks from other sites who are already listed on yahoo, google, etc then the search engines will find and index your site automatically. The question then is only how long will it take to get listed. IMHO you should only pay to add your url if you MUST get listed asap for some reason.

So yahoo does not exclude a site from the directory for not paying. If I looked up sites already listed and got links from them, yahoo will add the site?

Is that what you’re saying?

No, yahoo will not exclude you for not paying. Obviously, they would appreciate your money and some sites may feel that the benefit of a (possibly) quick listing outweighs the cost but it is definately not necessary.

If you get / exchange links with sites already listed in yahoo then what happens is that their spider will revisit the other sites, find the link to your site and follow it to your pages. If their are plenty of pages with useful content then yahoo will index you automatically. (Links from other sites validate yours - the idea being that if another site links to yours then yours must have some value)

As to which links are most useful, well that is debateable - read articles on search engine optimisation to see what I mean. If all you want is to be listed then any link at all will probably help. If you want to be listed highly in search engine results then one way links from other sites with similar content are what you are going to need.

hope this helps Smiling

(Another option which may work is to keep posting in forums like this one as sites like forums and blogs are spidered by the search engines more frequently due to the ever-changing content - just make sure you have a hyperlink to your site in your sig)

I’m talking about yahoo directory. I think that it is different than search, but I’m not sure.
