Never heard about this term before but i know without www which url name with www. Which is important concept in search engine optimization.

The correct statement is that a site CAN work without the www. It has to be set up to handle it. Most server configs do it by default, but not something that ALWAYS work. It is still a sub domain same as sdfsdf.domain.com and need set to feed when called on the web server, as well in DNS needs to be set to send all sub domains, or set specially for www. to go to the correct IP.
