Hi there,

If all of you have been desperate to get traffic, like I am, I'm pretty sure you've read and done a lot of stuff. Still according to me, the two best ways to get traffic are the search engines and word of mouth. Any comments on how to instigate people to use the latter technique?

I think that it all comes back to content. if you've got good content and a good product (good service, good pricing etc...) , all you need is one person to have a good experience on your site and they'll pass it on. I've seen this many times on the fitness boards I hang out on. All you need is one mention of a new product and people are ready to buy. Get a few people talking about how good a workout is and even more will jump on board.

I think it also helps to know where the people are - who is interested in this product? Where do they hang out? You don't want to be a shill, but at the same time you can make contact with people and let them know about your product.

Just make sure word of mouth is easy. Have a 'Tell A Friend' link which will pop up an e-mail, or create a form if you're more advanced.

A stealth word of mouth tactic would be to start joke/game e-mails with your web address on and forward it to everyone you know.

It may be a cliche, but content is still king. It also helps to offer incentives for people to return to your site. Messageboards, newsfeeds, and a "what's new" section are a few ways to promote return visits. Try keeping your content fresh by adding a few pages to your site everyday. Having useful and unique content is the most effective way to build natural links (the best type of links you can have) to your site. Traffic-building is a long and arduous process, but in the end it will pay off.

Good luck on your site!

Althogh content is KING. Having an original site is too. I seen too many Vbulletin messageboards that are using the default style and looks like Vbulletin.com . I have found talking to others that people generally don't like a site that looks like no effort was put in it. Thats of course not true IF theres enough original content to keep the visitor
